Many hospitality workers accept the first offer they receive without negotiating—leaving thousands of dollars on the table over time. Start by researching your market value. The best time to negotiate is when you have an offer but haven't accepted yet, or after 6-12 months of strong performance.
How to Frame It
Lead with your value, not your needs. Instead of "I need more money," try "Based on my experience managing high-volume sections and training new staff, I was hoping we could discuss compensation in the $X-Y range." If they say no, ask what you need to do to earn that raise. Remember that compensation includes more than base pay—better sections, prime shifts, and flexible scheduling all have monetary value.
